Daily Dharma Walking the Natural Path with an Open Mind Shanjian Dashi 9781461072676 Books

In this series of questions and answers by a living Dharma master (Theravada, Chan, and Mahamudra traditions) and his students over the last ten years, readers may encounter a teaching that’s unusually clear, candid, and compassionate. This extended collective dialogue is especially recommended for those who would rather cut through the exotic trappings that often surround Buddhist teachings in order to get to their untimely gist, which is their practical value here and now. The selected conversations cover topics of general interest for everyday life as well as specific instructions for meditators and practitioners. In four sections they present the noble path of Dharma, explain the Buddhist understanding of how the mind works, illustrate with many examples how this understanding applies to daily living, and discuss several tools this path puts in people’s hands to enable them to find their own nature. Shanjian’s unique teaching style reflects his training as biologist and psychologist in the US, his learning from legendary Buddhist masters such as Narada Mahathera and Nyanaponika Thera and, most important of all, his direct experience of the truth of the path as outlined by the Buddha. Combining his first-hand knowledge of the Dharma’s Eastern roots with the down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach favored by Western audiences, Shanjian’s replies range from the iconoclastic to the deeply moving as they open a straight and level path to access the Dharma in a way that makes sense to contemporary readers.
Daily Dharma Walking the Natural Path with an Open Mind Shanjian Dashi 9781461072676 Books
This book leaves you feeling like you have met a Dharma master close up and personal. In part it's because of the question-and-answer format, which makes you feel like you're eavesdropping on a conversation, and in part because he's so straightforward and down-to-earth in his replies. No pretense here.I don't think there are many so-called masters who would take the time to sit down and level with people from all walks of life and field questions on pressing mundane matters such as personal relationships, sex, drugs, suicide, war and a ton more in a way that's clear, intelligent, non-dogmatic and compassionate; that's just what's offered in these pages. Even if you don't always agree with what's being said (Shanjian Dashi is no "Dr. Feelgood"), this is a rare glimpse of the inner workings of a master-student relationship --or at least what it should be like.
Many of us are skeptical of modern-day masters who tour the world, drop by your city, deliver their talk or retreat, and then fly off somewhere else without really knowing anything personal about their audiences at all. I knew Shanjian personally and, believe me, he was the opposite. He really walked his talk; he was willing to get down and dirty with his students, who were few but highly dedicated. It's a pity he's gone now, but this book offers some inkling of a Dharma life spent helping and guiding others on their paths.
As a Westerner, trained as an experimental psychologist and biologist, Shanjian Dashi speaks in a language that's familiar and understandable, even if challenging at times. I strongly recommend this book, especially for those who are disappointed or put off by the exotic trappings of Buddhism but sense there's real value in it if only they could get beyond the outer crust and see from the inside.
May this book help you as much as it's helped me!

Daily Dharma Walking the Natural Path with an Open Mind Shanjian Dashi 9781461072676 Books Reviews
This is a great book by a great Master. The explanations are very understandable and useful. From understanding everyday issues to know the true Dharma. Sometimes the Dharma is lost in words and ideas that can not be transported to our lives. This book connects the wisdom to daily life, the daily dharma, our daily nature.
